Beyond the Mine: The Circular Future of Critical Minerals

The energy transition and global defense build-up are driving unprecedented demand for critical minerals, but can we continue to rely solely on extraction?

The answer is a resounding no. We need a paradigm shift towards circularity, sustainable alternatives, and responsible usage, and the opportunities for innovation and investment are immense.

The Scale of the Challenge (and Opportunity):

The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects that the demand for critical minerals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel could increase by as much as six times by 2040 in a sustainable development scenario.

The EU's Bold Move:

The European Union has launched 47 strategic projects under the Critical Raw Materials Act, spanning processing, recycling, and substitution.

These projects are expected to attract approximately €22.5 billion in capital expenditure, with coordinated support.

Permitting will be fast-tracked, with maximum timelines of 27 months for extractive projects and 15 months for others.

The materials covered are aluminium, tungsten, rare earth elements, platinum, nickel, manganese, magnesium, lithium, germanium, gallium, copper, cobalt, and boron.

The Imperative for Innovation and Responsible Use:

Responsible and Efficient Usage: Alongside recycling and alternative materials, we must focus on better efficiency in how we use existing minerals. This includes optimising product design to minimize mineral content and extending product lifecycles.

Motivating Circularity: Implementing policies and incentives for collection and recycling.

Efficient Collection Processes: Developing robust and scalable waste collection systems.
